Brain scans show researchers the way to better treatment

Researchers at Vanderbilt University say they are zeroing in on the most effective ways of treating life threatening strokes.

Doctors have several options when it comes to treating ischemic strokes, caused by blockages in a vessel in or leading to the brain.

Using brain imaging equipment, researchers looked at the success rate of all treatment techniques in a sample of over 1,000 severe stroke patients. The two most effective therapies were placing stents in the brain and injecting clot-busting drugs directly to the brain.

The next part of the study will look at whether success with these treatments continues over the next three months of follow up.

The results were presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2010.
