Pueblo County's school district has voted to go to a four-day school week, next school year. During tonight's District 70 school board meeting, board members voted unanimously for the change, in order to save some $1.1 Million.

While several parents and teachers who spoke at the meeting agreed that it is not a great situation for the kids, they say it is necessary in order to save money.

The school board also approved one furlough day for all administrators, to be taken throughout the month of March. The district needs to cut $5.8 Million from next year's budget.

One of the worst decisions for our children ever. Decisions like this based on finances alone are going to make our children dumber not smarter.

Truthfully it's a good thing it's better than some of the other options so far. My sister-in-law's school has been on a 4 day week for over 20yrs and they are doing just fine on state exams. It is also helps ease the budget so they don't have to cut as many teachers and/or perhaps close schools which only make the other schools more crowded. Just look at Roncalli and Pitts in Pueblo District 60. They made Corwin into a magnet school and now both of those schools are being seriously looked at by the state to be taken over. They also have classes  sometimes of 30+ kids that is what hurts the kids education. When I found out they were putting the Corwin kids in Roncalli I pulled my kids. I know people who work on that extra day worry, but there are places like the YMCA. There is always a worse alternative.

This will probably lower home values a bit, which in turn will lower property tax revenue.

If you lower 20,000 homes by $10,000 each, you have lowered the value of the community by $200 Million to save $1.1 Million.

And, if the property tax rate is 1%, that would also be $2 Million/yr in lower tax revenue to work with.
