Just back from three weeks in Afghanistan visiting Mountain Post soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Colorado Springs- based Internet talk show host Bob Calvert is still going strong. On Saturday, also Armed Forces Day, Calvert hosted a radio talk show at a local conference for military spouses.
"I've had people commenting, yesterday as a matter of fact, I look real tired. Well yeah, if you don't sleep much for 3 weeks" Calvert says, who hosts segments on his own website, Talking with Heroes.
The site has video and stories from 63 year-old Calvert's three war zone trips, most recently three days ago.
His first two trips were to Iraq. Calvert has been putting up stories from soldiers he's met along the way, in their own words, without editing.
Calvert gets to see, hear and get a small experience of what things are like for the troops on the ground.
"It's not easy, I don't know how they do it," Calvert says, but he adds that they are doing the job well; at least that's what he takes from his footage
"I can take the videos, and I've saved them all, from the 1st trip to Iraq, the 2nd and the 3rd, and probably produce an incredible documentary because it shows the progress," Calvert says, "You can see it sequentially."
He's working to getting his latest videos and stories online so that everyone can have a look of their own. He hopes to have them online soon.
As for Calvert's work, it's a job he gets no money for, but takes it on as his mission.
"I'm too old to join, so this is my way of serving," Calvert says.
