The El Paso County sheriff's office is investigating a deadly shooting in the Security/Widefield area. It happened just after 3 in the afternoon Thursday in the 4000 block of Oberding Drive.

"What is a festive Thanksgiving environment is now turned somber in this neighborhood for the people here who witnessed this or know what happened," says Joe Breister, Bureau Chief for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

El Paso County Sheriff's deputies say 76-year-old Alyais Oliver shot his son, 49-year-old Keith Oliver, once in the head and killed him.

Deputies say the two were arguing over chores.

The father told deputies he shot his son. However, Oliver didn't clarify whether it was an accident or not. Deputies say it doesn't look like an accident.

Oliver was taken for questioning at the Sheriff's Office.

It's a tough scene to watch for neighbors.

"For this to happen is very unexpected. It's very quiet around here," says Brian Baker.

Baker's wife Monica adds, "It's quiet neighborhood, nothing happens over here."

For the Baker family and neighbors, enjoyment of Thanksgiving came to a quick halt.

Brian Baker was outside playing with the kids.

"(I) Wasn't paying too much attention to things going on around us until Sheriff's deputies pulled up in cars, guns drawn, very tense situation," says Brian Baker.

Eventually the neighbors learned what happened.

As the Bakers conclude Thanksgiving, they have a little more on their mind.

"Very thankful, be blessed for what you have and cherish it," Monica Baker says.

Despite the distractions, neighbors will go on trying to do just that.

This is a tragic day. Keith Oliver was good man, an honest man, and a generous man. All of Keith?s friends will miss him dearly.  Keith was forthright, and blunt. He called ?um like he saw ?um and he made no apologies. He was a man of tremendous faith and devotion to God. He was Navy veteran who served his country honorably. He was a fabulous artist and his paintings are hung in some of the finest art galleries in Denver.  Keith had a twin brother, Kyle who struggled with health issues.  Keith loved Kyle very much, he was devoted to Kyle and he did his very best to protect and support his brother. Keith spent much of his adult life trying to overcome a dysfunctional and abusive family situation. He rarely visited his parents as the dysfunctional dynamics often resulted in him feeling depressed and upset. Keith would also be the first to tell you to please not be in judgment of his father, to please forgive his father for his transgression as his father is a child of God, who unfortunately has lost his way. Keith would ask you to pray that one day his father will find peace and find his way home to God.

"his father is a child of god"

yeah, whatever.  HE SHOT HIS OWN SON IN THE HEAD!

What kind of person does that?

    A child of god?

this country needs to stop making excuses and hold people accountable for their own actions... i'm sure in a few months we'll get to see his "insanity defense" play out in the news.

take him out front, and shoot the father in the head.

    case closed.

Actions like these are fueling the fire to remove your right to bear arms. There are those that would love to see this happen.

Abraham, a "child of god" and father to Isaac and Ishmael, because God told him too. Though, thankfully (for Isaac) God withdrew the request.

Amen to that. In fact, the uptick in "news" stories related to "gun violence" is no coincidence. The elimination of America's "Right to keep and bear arms" is still a major goal of anti-civil libertarians both foreign and domestic.

This is a sad case of domestic violence in its worst form.  Not only did Keith lose his life, his brother, mother and other family are left in the wake of this murder.  This is the culmination of decades of domestic violence, where it "appears" (because we don't know) that the "dad" was not held accountable for his behavior from the past.  Keith would have been better off just staying away from this monster and setting another time aside to see his mother and other relatives.  My step-dad was much like his dad and I will have absolutely nothing to do with him - ever.  For my sake and for the sake of my children.  If you were an abuse victim, only you have the power to stop the abuse by removing yourself from the situation forever.  You owe the abuser ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!  There is ABSOLUTELY no excuse for their behavior.  NONE.
