Prostitution spike in Colorado Springs

An alert's been issued about a spike in prostitution in one section of Colorado Springs.

Detectives with Metro VNI say they've seen a big increase this year on east Platte avenue. So far this year, they've arrested 87 prostitutes and "Johns" there.   In that same area last year, there were just 20 arrests.

They say that is the biggest increase they've seen in the city since their task force, targeting prostitution, was formed 6 years ago.

Detectives say they haven't been able to pinpoint a reason for this increase. Detective Kristin Buckley works undercover. She says, "A couple of them say because they can't find work or they've been laid off. Other than trying to support their drug habit, they don't have a reason."

Detective Olav Chaney says this affects our community as a whole. "When you have an increase in prostitution, there's probably an increase of other crimes and that's something nobody wants, businesses, districts or neighborhoods," he says.

Detectives are patrolling that area every day, and ask that if you see any prostitutes soliciting you page them.

Detective Chaney: 328-8315

Detective Buckley: 328-8399
