Pueblo plant will get $1.5 million in solar panels

The City of Pueblo is investing in solar panels to reduce energy costs at one of its facilities. On Tuesday, city leaders broke ground on a project to install 1,800 solar panels at the waste water treatment plant on S. Queens Ave.
The city will spend $1.5 million on the project. In the long run, the city says it will result in an annual cost savings of between $80,000-$100,000 a year.
"Electric consumption is a very big component of the treatment cost for wastewater treatment, and we're always going to need wastewater treatment. So it really seems to make a lot of sense putting as much effort as we can into alternative sources of energy," said Gene Michael, Wastewater Director for the City of Pueblo.
The city estimates the panels will supply up to 15% of the power the plant uses.
