Reported sex assaults plummet at Air Force Academy

Reports of sexual assaults at the Air Force Academy dropped by two-thirds during the 2008-2009 school year.

A Defense Department study released Friday said eight assaults were reported last year, compared with 24 the year before. Numbers rose at the Army and Navy academies. A Pentagon report says the numbers may reflect a decline in attacks but cautions that some assaults may not have been reported.

It praises the Air Force Academy for prevention programs and for finding innovative ways to help victims. It says commanders are committed to reducing assaults.

But it says two cadets declined to go on the record with assault complaints after a suspect was acquitted in another case. It says that case and the reaction to it may have discouraged others.
